BIO

Shyamla is an accomplished Performing Artist, Choreographer and Teacher with three decades of dance experience and a Master’s Degree in International Human Rights Law. She has taught at renowned studios throughout Australia and abroad (Sydney Dance Company, Ettingshausens, Dance Attic UK) and specialises in cultural dance (Hip Hop, Bollywood, Traditional Indian and Brazilian Samba), having trained and performed each style in its country of origin.

Since 2013 Shyamla has toured her range of dance and movement workshops around Australia promoting cross-cultural interactions, diverse representation, inclusivity and belonging. Her work has been featured on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2018, in front of thousands of people at TEDxSydney 2018, on national television in Australia’s largest indoor venue (Qudos Bank Arena) for Schools Spectacular 2018, at NSW Education events for The Arts Unit (State Dance Festival and Ultimo Dance festival) and has been acknowledged by Beyoncé, Youtube sensation Lilly Singh and Bollywood Icon Sonam Kapoor.

Shyamla’s latest workshop “Hip Hopping from Bollywood to Brazil…and Beyond” features dance styles from around the globe including 80s/90s Hip Hop and Tutting from New York, Rio Funk, Bahian Axé and Samba from Brazil and Classic Bollywood and Street Dance from India. This non-stop movement-based experience is filled with infectious rhythms that encourage self-expression, team spirit and cross-cultural appreciation and has been going strong since 2013. With a pumping soundtrack that is updated every year, Shyamla has danced/trained in each country featured. 60-minute session. Suitable for K-12.

Indian Jungle Dance Safari

Grab your camo, pack your binoculars and hop in the Jeep to explore the jungles of South India in this unique movement-based adventure. Shyamla teaches students how to move like Indian animals living in the wild through fun facts and her first-hand experience with elephants, a tiger, cheeky macaques, a leopard, peacocks, a rat snake, a king cobra and more! Puppets and props are combined with an immersive soundtrack to create a safari-inspired dance where children act out specific roles and behaviours with props. The workshop inspires self-expression and teaches children about the importance of maintaining natural habitats for wild creatures. 60-minute session. Suitable for K-6.

Hip Hop Flashmob

Set to a mix of classic and popular tunes, students will learn a performable dance routine in just 90 minutes! Shyamla will get them sliding, gliding and grooving as individuals, in partners/trios and in formations as a whole “crew”, complete with transitions. Personal creativity, teamwork and improvisation are encouraged through “freestyling” as a group and, for the more confident, as soloists. Guaranteed to have students Top Rockin’, Electric Sliding and Dabbing the day away! No prior dance experience necessary. Adjusted to suit all levels of ability. 90-minute session. Suitable for Years 5-12.
