Jamel Singh & Dheeraj Shrestha

BIO

Jamel Kaur Singh studied Classical South Indian, Barathanatium Dance since the age of 6 and has travelled to Singapore to further her studies in North Indian Kathak dance and Classical Indian vocal music and tabla. Her upbringing in Punjabi folk dance, Bhangra, and interest in modern forms of dance such as hip-hop and Latin allows her to choreograph using traditional, folk and contemporary influences. Jamel is based in Melbourne

Dheeraj Shrestha was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, and is recognized as the foremost tabla percussionist in Australia. Formally trained in tabla with guru Pt. Hom Nath Upadhyaya, Dheeraj is internationally acclaimed, known worldwide for his easy flowing, creative style, clarity, and exciting improvisation. He has over 20 years of professional music experience, and has toured internationally for many years, as well as teaching music in Australia and Nepal. Dheeraj is currently based in Brisbane.

A colourful blend of Indian percussion and dance featuring Jamel Singh & Dheeraj Shrestha.

Bollywood dancing is enjoying unprecedented popularity due to the Bollywood film industry. Bollywood fuses rap, raga, latin and hip-hop into a lively mixture of folk, classical, global and local traditions.

Jamel performs traditional Indian song and dance accompanied by master Tabla player Dheeraj Shrestha. The performance gives students insight into Indian music, dance and culture.

Dheeraj will go over percussive rhythms with students, while Jamel even teaches some popular Bollywood moves, students and teachers alike can participate!

Colourful and vibrant Bollywood dance segments for any occasion.

Jamel can perform by herself and works through dances with students using recorded music. This incursion allows an understanding of the history and the meaning behind the dances in a highly energetic interactive program.

The costumes are colourful, authentic and tailor-made from India to give a special touch to these very popular presentations.
