Judy Watson

BIO

Judy Watson is a book illustrator and artist, working from a home studio overlooking peaceful Sweetwater Creek in Victoria. Children’s book illustration combines her interests in the visual arts, animals, nature, people, stage and costume, and books.

Illustrating children’s books since 1998, Judy has been published by Penguin, HarperCollins, Walker Books, and Allen & Unwin. Her picture book Goodnight, Mice! (author Frances Watts) won a Prime Minister’s Literary Award in 2012. Searching for Cicadas (author Lesley Gibbes) was shortlisted for the CBCA Eve Pownall Award in 2020. Leonard Doesn’t Dance (author Frances Watts) was selected by the International Youth Library for inclusion in the White Ravens Catalogue 2020. Her latest book When You’re Older (author Sofie Laguna) was longlisted for the CBCA Picture Book of the Year Award for 2023.The illustrations were shortlisted for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrator Exhibition 2022 and shortlisted in the Nami Concours 2023.

Workshops

Judy enjoys visiting schools, especially when she can work with students on a creative project. Some of the workshops she offers include:

• Working drawings to final art. Illustrating the adventures in When You’re Older: with bears, dragons, crabs and wild dogs, which creature would you choose? (Suitable for Prep-6; smaller groups for younger students; 40 minutes)

• Character Development, with reference to the Prime Minister’s Literary Award winning book Goodnight, Mice! (Suitable for Years 3-8; up to 100 students, 90 minutes)

• Visually interpreting a story arc, with reference to Leonard Doesn’t Dance (Years 5-8; up to 100 students; 90 minutes)
